Overview

Arginine-vasopressin (AVP), Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)

Vasopressin, a peptide hormone also referred to as arginine-vasopressin (AVP) or antidiuretic hormone (ADH), plays an imortant role in many physiological processes. Vasopressin is a nine amino acid messenger, proteolytically processed from a 164 aa precursor mainly in the paraventricular nucleus of hypothalamus (PVN) and Supraoptic nucleus (SON). The peptide is secreted from the posterior pituitary gland in response to decreased arterial blood volume. Its main effect in the body are an increased reabsorption of water in the kidney and a vasoconstriction resulting in an increase of blood pressure. Some vasopressin is also released directly into the brain and is involved in cognition, social behavior, sexual motivation, pair-bonding and maternal behavior.
