Background

Histamine is synthesized by histidine decarboxylase (HDC) in many different cell types. Mast cells and basopile granulocytes store histamine in their granules that is released upon external stimulation.
In addition histamine acts as a modulatory neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain.
HDC expressing neurons occur in the tuberomammillary nucleus (TMN), which is located in the hypothalamus. It is the only site of neuronal histamine synthesis in the adult mammalian brain.
